450 Sq Ft Studio Apartment Layouts: 3 Ways to Furnish the Same Room

Short answer

Fits 450 sq ft is about 21 × 21 feet in total. Take out a 40 sq ft bathroom and the main room is 410 sq ft, about 18′ 1″ × 22′ 8″ in a typical shape. That holds a queen bed with both sides open, a full 84″ sofa with a coffee table, a desk, a dresser and a 30″ dining table, with 36″ walkways in any room shape. Below are three different ways to arrange the same room.

How big is 450 square feet?

450 sq ft is a square about 21′ 3″ on each side (√450 = 21.2 ft), or any rectangle whose sides multiply to 450: 15 × 30 ft, 18 × 25 ft or 20 × 22½ ft. It is 3.75 times the floor of a 10 × 12 bedroom (120 sq ft).

In a studio, part of that is the bathroom. Take 40 sq ft off and the main room, where you sleep, sit, eat and cook, is 410 sq ft, or about 3.4 of those bedrooms. Here is that room in the three shapes the Studio Solver uses:

Room shapeLengthMain room, 410 sq ft
Squarewidth × 120′ 3″ × 20′ 3″
Standardwidth × 1.2518′ 1″ × 22′ 8″
Longwidth × 1.616′ 0″ × 25′ 7″
Total 450 sq ft, less a 40 sq ft bathroom. The standard shape is the one used for the three layouts below.

Fully furnished, most of it stays open. A queen bed, an 84″ sofa, a coffee table, a desk, a dresser, a 30″ dining table and a 96″ kitchen counter cover about 102 sq ft. That leaves about 308 sq ft, three quarters of the room, for walkways and the space around each piece.

Everything fits, at the roomiest clearances

We ran four furniture sets through the Studio Solver at 450 sq ft: a queen with a 68″ or an 84″ sofa, a coffee table, a desk, a dresser and a 30″ dining table, each with one or both sides of the bed open. In all three room shapes and at all three clearance levels, every one of the 36 runs gives 3 layouts. That includes 36″ walkways with both sides of the bed open and the 84″ sofa, where a 350 sq ft studio gets 1 layout in the standard shape.

So at 450 sq ft the question isn’t what fits, it’s how you want the room to work. The Studio Solver’s three plans for the standard room answer that three different ways.

The room is 18′ 1″ × 22′ 8″, with a 32″ entrance door and a 30″ bathroom door on the bottom wall, a 60″ window centered on the top wall, and a 96″ kitchen counter on the right. Each plan holds a queen with both sides open, an 84″ sofa with a 48 × 24″ coffee table, a 48″ desk, a 32″ dresser and a 30″ dining table, and passes every check with 36″ walkways. Hatched areas are the clear space each check needs.

The bed’s head is on the top wall under the left end of the window, with both sides open. The sofa sits 36″ past the foot of the bed with its back to it, and the coffee table is 18″ in front. The desk sits right beside the window, the dresser is on the right wall above the kitchen counter, and the dining table is on the bottom wall between the two doors. The bed is 12′ 11″ from the entrance door swing.

Best for: a bed that feels like its own room, with the sofa between it and the rest of the studio.

The trade-off: from the sofa you look at the entrance wall, and the bed is the nearest of the three to the front door.

Layout B: Everything against the walls

Best for: a bed centered under the window and a sitting area you can walk behind.

The trade-off: the sofa faces the bed end of the room, and the desk is 4′ 5″ from the window.

In the square and long shapes the solver also finds 3 plans with the same furniture. The long room puts the bed 15′ 11″ from the entrance door swing in all three.

Measure this first

  • The main room wall to wall in two places, not counting the bathroom. A studio listed at 450 sq ft may count the bathroom and closets, so measure the room you will furnish.
  • The kitchen counter: its length, its depth, and how far it sits from each corner.
  • Both doors: width, which wall they are on, and which way they swing.
  • The window: width and how far it is from the nearest corner.
  • Your bed frame and sofa at their outside edges, including arms and headboard.

Questions people ask

What size room is 450 square feet?

Any room whose length times width is 450: about 21′ 3″ square, or 15 × 30, 18 × 25 or 20 × 22½ feet. In a studio, take the bathroom off first. With a 40 sq ft bathroom the main room is 410 sq ft: 20′ 3″ square, 18′ 1″ × 22′ 8″ in a standard shape, or 16′ 0″ × 25′ 7″ if long. For the standard shape: width = √(410 ÷ 1.25) = 18.11 ft, and length = 18.11 × 1.25 = 22.64 ft.

Is a 450 sq ft apartment small?

For a studio, it is enough for everything the Studio Solver tests at its roomiest clearances: a queen bed with both sides open, an 84″ sofa and coffee table, a desk, a dresser and a dining table, with 36″ walkways in any room shape. About three quarters of the main room stays open floor.

What does 450 sq ft look like furnished?

The three plans above show it: a queen, a full sofa, a desk, a dresser and a dining table in an 18′ 1″ × 22′ 8″ main room, with about 308 sq ft of the 410 left open.

What is a good layout for a 450 sq ft studio apartment?

It depends on what you want most. Put the sofa at the foot of the bed with its back to it to make a separate sleeping zone (Layout A). Push everything to the walls for an open middle and the bed farthest from the door (Layout B). Float the sofa off a wall to make a sitting area you can walk around (Layout C).

Can both sides of a queen bed stay open in 450 sq ft?

Yes, with 36″ on each side, together with an 84″ sofa and a dining table: the solver finds 3 layouts in every room shape. All three plans on this page keep both sides open.
