600 Sq Ft Studio Apartment Layouts: Zone It Like a One-Bedroom

Short answer

Fits A 600 sq ft studio fits a queen bed open on both sides, a full 84″ sofa with a coffee table, a 48″ desk, a dresser and a 30″ dining table with the roomiest 36″ walkways, in a square, standard or long room. That leaves room to zone it like a one-bedroom. In every shape, the solver can turn the back of the sofa to the foot of the bed, so the bed gets its own end of the room, 15′ to 21′ from the front door.

How big is a 600 sq ft studio?

Take 40 sq ft off for the bathroom and the main room is 560 sq ft, more than twice the 260 sq ft of a 300 sq ft studio. Here is what that means in each room shape, with the full furniture set above and 36″ walkways.

ShapeMain roomLayouts with 36″ pathsBed to front door, zoned plan

Standard21′ 2″ × 26′ 5″3 layouts16′ 8″
Long18′ 8″ × 29′ 11″3 layouts21′ 1″
Layout counts are Studio Solver runs at the roomy level with a queen 64 × 84″ open on both sides, sofa 84 × 37″, coffee table 48 × 24″, desk 48 × 24″, dresser 32 × 18″ and dining table 30 × 30″. Bed to front door is the distance from the bed to the entrance door’s swing in the zoned plan for that shape (Layouts A–C below). Length = width × 1 (square), × 1.25 (standard) or × 1.6 (long). The solver uses a 96″ kitchen counter in all three.

The same set gets 3 layouts in every shape at the standard and minimum levels too, so at 600 sq ft the question is how to arrange the room, not what fits.

How to zone a 600 sq ft studio

All three plans below divide the room the same way. These are the measurements they share.

  • Sleep. The bed goes against the window wall, at the far end from the entrance, with at least 36″ beside each side. It ends up 15′ 0″ to 21′ 1″ from the front door’s swing.
  • Sit. The sofa’s back faces the foot of the bed, 36″ away, and that walkway is the line between the two zones. The sofa faces a 48 × 24″ coffee table, 18″ in front.
  • Eat. The 30″ table sits against a wall with 32″ for a chair at each end, clear of both door swings: on the entrance wall between the doors in the square and long rooms, and on the kitchen wall in the standard room.
  • Work. The desk stays on the window wall: right beside the window in the standard and long rooms, and 4′ 4″ from it in the square room.

3 zoned layouts for a 600 sq ft studio, one per shape

Each room has a 32″ entrance door and a 30″ bathroom door on the bottom wall, a 60″ window centered on the top wall, and a 96″ kitchen counter on the right wall. Each holds a queen open on both sides, an 84″ sofa with a 48 × 24″ coffee table, a 48″ desk, a 32″ dresser and a 30″ dining table, and passes every check with 36″ walkways. Hatched areas are the clear space each check needs.

Layout A. 600 sq ft studio, square shape, 23′ 8″ × 23′ 8″ main room, roomy clearances. Drawn by the Studio Solver.

The bed is centered under the window with its head on the top wall, with the desk near the top-left corner and the dresser in the top-right one. The sofa stands 36″ past the foot of the bed with its back to it, facing the coffee table 18″ in front. The dining table is on the entrance wall between the two doors, 6′ 11″ from the entrance door and 7′ 1″ from the bathroom door. The bed is 15′ 0″ from the entrance door swing.

Best for: a bedroom end built around the window, with the bed in the middle of the wall.

The trade-off: the bed is the closest to the front door of the three plans, and the desk is 4′ 4″ from the window rather than beside it.

Layout B: Standard room, dining by the kitchen

All checks pass

Best for: an open entry. Apart from the kitchen counter, nothing stands in the 9′ 9″ between the coffee table and the entrance wall.

The trade-off: you eat at the sleeping end of the room, nearer the bed than the front door.

Layout C: Long room, bed at the far end

The trade-off: cooking happens right next to the sitting area: the coffee table is 1′ 3″ from the end of the kitchen counter.

Measure this first

  • The main room wall to wall in two places, not counting the bathroom. A 600 sq ft studio can be close to square or almost 30′ long.
  • Which wall the entrance door is on. The plans here put the bed on the opposite wall, so the farther away that wall is, the more private the bed.
  • The kitchen counter: its length, its depth, and how far it sits from each corner.
  • Both doors: width, which wall they are on, and which way they swing.
  • Your bed frame and sofa at their outside edges, including arms and headboard.

Questions people ask

How big is a 600 sq ft studio?

After a 40 sq ft bathroom, the 560 sq ft main room is about 23′ 8″ × 23′ 8″ if square, 21′ 2″ × 26′ 5″ in a standard shape (length 1.25 × width) and 18′ 8″ × 29′ 11″ if long (length 1.6 × width). For the standard shape: width = √(560 ÷ 1.25) = 21.17 ft, and length = 21.17 × 1.25 = 26.46 ft.

Is 600 sq ft big for a studio?

It is the largest size we test, from 200 to 600 sq ft. The queen (64 × 84″), sofa (84 × 37″), coffee table (48 × 24″), desk (48 × 24″), dresser (32 × 18″), dining table (30 × 30″) and a 96 × 25″ counter cover 14,664 sq in, and 14,664 ÷ 144 = 101.8 sq ft. That leaves about 458 sq ft of the 560 sq ft main room uncovered.

Can a 600 sq ft studio feel like a one-bedroom?

It can have a sleeping end of its own. In all three plans above, the sofa backs onto the foot of the bed with a 36″ walkway between them, and the bed is 15′ 0″ to 21′ 1″ from the front door. There is no wall, so the two zones stay open to each other.

Where should the bed go in a 600 sq ft studio?

Against the wall farthest from the entrance. In all three plans that is the window wall, and the longer the room, the farther the bed gets from the door: 15′ 0″ in the square room, 16′ 8″ in the standard one and 21′ 1″ in the long one.

Can both sides of a queen bed stay open?

Yes. Every plan on this page keeps 36″ beside both sides of the bed, and all three room shapes pass.
