Short answer
Fits A 500 sq ft studio fits a queen bed open on both sides, a full 84″ sofa with a coffee table, a 48″ desk, a dresser and a 30″ dining table with the roomiest 36″ walkways, whether the room is square, standard or long. How 500 sq ft compares with 400 and 600
We ran the same furniture through the Studio Solver at the roomy level, with 36″ walkways and 18″ to the coffee table. All three sizes get three layouts in every room shape, so what the extra space buys is open floor.
| Studio | Main room | Floor left uncovered | Layouts with 36″ paths |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 sq ft | 360 sq ft | about 258 sq ft | 3 in every shape |
| 500 sq ft | 460 sq ft | about 358 sq ft | 3 in every shape |
| 600 sq ft | 560 sq ft | about 458 sq ft | 3 in every shape |
At 500 sq ft, the 460 sq ft main room works out to 21′ 5″ × 21′ 5″ (square), 19′ 2″ × 24′ 0″ (standard), 16′ 11″ × 27′ 2″ (long).
3 roomy layouts for a 500 sq ft studio
The room: 19′ 2″ × 24′ 0″. A 32″ entrance door and a 30″ bathroom door on the bottom wall, a 60″ window centered on the top wall, and a 96″ kitchen counter on the right wall. Every layout holds the full set above and passes every check with 36″ walkways. Hatched areas are the clear space each check needs.
Layout A: Sofa as a room divider
All checks pass
The queen sits on the top wall with 45″ on its left and 37″ on its right. The sofa has its back to the foot of the bed, 36″ away, and faces the coffee table, 18″ in front. The desk sits beside the window, the dresser takes the top-right corner, and the dining table is on the entrance wall, between the two doors. The bed is 14′ 3″ from the entrance door swing.
Best for: a sleeping zone of its own, set apart by the sofa and far from the front door.
The trade-off: the dining table sits between the two doors, so you eat right by the entrance.
Layout B: Floating sofa
All checks pass
The bed shifts toward the right wall, the desk sits just left of the window and the dresser takes the top-left corner. The sofa floats in the middle of the room, 10′ 1″ off the right wall, and faces the left wall with the coffee table 18″ in front. The dining table is on the left wall, between the dresser and the sitting area. The bed is 15′ 8″ from the entrance door swing.
Best for: a sitting area in the middle of the room, with a 36″ walkway behind the sofa.
The trade-off: the sofa faces the left wall, not the bed or the window.
Layout C: Everything against the walls
All checks pass
The bed, desk and dresser stay where they are in Layout B. The sofa backs onto the bottom wall between the two doors, with the coffee table 18″ in front, and the dining table stays on the left wall.
Best for: the most open floor, with every piece on a wall.
The trade-off: the sofa faces the bed, 13′ 9″ away, so the bed is always in view from the sofa.

Measure this first
- The main room wall to wall in two places, not counting the bathroom. A 500 sq ft studio can be close to square or more than 27′ long.
- The kitchen counter: its length, its depth, and how far it sits from each corner.
- Both doors: width, which wall they are on, and which way they swing.
- The window: width and how far it is from the nearest corner.
- Your bed frame and sofa at their outside edges, including arms and headboard.
Questions people ask
What are the dimensions of a 500 sq ft studio?
After a 40 sq ft bathroom, the 460 sq ft main room is about 21′ 5″ × 21′ 5″ if square, 19′ 2″ × 24′ 0″ in a standard shape (length 1.25 × width) and 16′ 11″ × 27′ 2″ if long (length 1.6 × width). For the standard shape: width = √(460 ÷ 1.25) = 19.18 ft, and length = 19.18 × 1.25 = 23.98 ft.
How much of a 500 sq ft studio does the furniture take up?
About 102 sq ft. The queen (64 × 84″), sofa (84 × 37″), coffee table (48 × 24″), desk (48 × 24″), dresser (32 × 18″), dining table (30 × 30″) and a 96 × 25″ counter add up to 14,664 sq in, and 14,664 ÷ 144 = 101.8 sq ft. That leaves about 358 sq ft of the 460 sq ft main room uncovered.
What does 500 sq ft give you over 400 sq ft?
About 100 sq ft more main room. With 36″ walkways, the solver finds 3 layouts in every room shape at both sizes, so the extra space shows up as open floor: about 358 sq ft left uncovered at 500 sq ft, against 258 at 400.
How do you separate the bed in a 500 sq ft studio?
Turn the sofa’s back to the foot of the bed, as in Layout A. That leaves 36″ between them, and the bed ends up 14′ 3″ from the entrance door swing.
Can both sides of a queen bed stay open?
Yes. Every plan on this page keeps both sides open with 36″ walkways, and all three room shapes pass.
