Short answer
57″ to the center On an open wall, hang art so its center is 57″ above the floor, the height museums and galleries use. Above a sofa, console or headboard, leave 8–10″ between the furniture and the frame instead. Then put the nail at the center height, plus half the frame height, minus the hanger drop.
57″

8–10″
above a sofa
⅔
of the furniture’s width
The 57″ rule puts the middle of the picture at average eye level, so you look straight at it instead of up. Turning that into a nail position is short arithmetic, with one catch: a wire pulls up toward the nail when the frame hangs, so the nail sits below the top of the frame.
Worked example: a 24″ frame on an open wall
- Center at 57″, so the top of the frame is at 57 + 12 = 69″.
- Pulled tight toward the top, the wire sits 3″ below the top of the frame.
- The nail goes at 69 − 3 = 66″ above the floor.
Above a sofa, bed or console
When art hangs over furniture, the two should read as one group, so the gap sets the height rather than the 57″ rule. Leave 8–10″ between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame; guides range from 6″ to 10″. Over an 84″ sofa, art about 56–63″ wide (two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa) looks balanced; narrower pieces can hang as a pair.
Example: a 30″-tall frame over a 34″ sofa back with an 8″ gap. The bottom sits at 42″, the top at 72″, and with a 4″ wire drop the nail goes at 68″.

Measure this first
- Frame height and width, outside edge to outside edge.
- Hanger drop: pull the wire tight toward the top, then measure from the top of the frame down to the wire.
- For two D-rings or hooks: the drop to the rings and the distance between them.
- The top of the furniture below, if any.
Questions people ask
How high should you hang a picture?
So its center is 57″ above the floor on an open wall. Some designers use 60″ in rooms with high ceilings.
How high above a couch should art hang?
Leave 8–10″ between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. The full range in published guides is 6–10″.
Does the 57-inch rule work for any size frame?
Yes, because it sets the center: a tall frame simply extends farther above and below 57″. Over furniture, the gap rule replaces it.
How do you hang a frame with two hooks?
Measure from the top of the frame to the hooks, subtract that from the top-of-frame height, and set two nails at that height, spaced exactly like the hooks.
How big is your sofa, really?
Standard sizes for sofas, beds, desks and tables, with a quick check of what fits your wall.
