Small rooms are planned in inches. Before you shop, it helps to know what “normal” is: how long a sofa usually runs, how deep a dresser is, how much bigger a bed frame is than the mattress. The finder above lists typical sizes with their sources, and marks what fits a spot when you enter its width and depth.

Using the sizes to plan

Leave room around each piece, not just for it. A dresser needs about 34″ in front to open a drawer and stand; a bed needs 24″ on each side you use; a desk chair needs 30″ behind the desk. The Clearance Checker has the full list.

Measure this first

  • The wall length and how far the piece can come out into the room.
  • Doors, windows, radiators and outlets along that wall.
  • The path in front of the piece: you’ll need room to walk and open drawers.
  • The doorways and hallway on the way in; see Will It Fit Through the Door?
