How big is a 400 sq ft studio?
Take 40 sq ft off for the bathroom and 360 sq ft is left for living, sleeping and the kitchen. How that floor is shaped matters as much as the number, so we ran three shapes.
| Shape | Main room | 24″ paths | 30″ paths | 36″ paths |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Square | 19′ 0″ × 19′ 0″ | 3 layouts | 3 layouts | 3 layouts |
| Standard | 17′ 0″ × 21′ 3″ | 3 layouts | 3 layouts | 3 layouts |
| Long | 15′ 0″ × 24′ 0″ | 3 layouts | 3 layouts | 1 layout |
The only squeeze is the long room with 36″ paths and both bed sides open: there the solver finds one layout instead of three.
3 layouts for a 400 sq ft studio
The room: 17′ 0″ × 21′ 3″. A 32″ entrance door and a 30″ bathroom door on the bottom wall, a 60″ window centered on the top wall, and a 96″ kitchen counter on the right wall. Every layout holds the full set above and passes every check at standard clearances. Hatched areas are the clear space each check needs.
Layout A: Sofa as a room divider
All checks pass
The queen sits on the top wall with 36″ on its left and at least 33″ on its right. The sofa has its back to the foot of the bed, 30″ away, and faces the coffee table, so the bed reads as its own room. The desk sits beside the window, the dresser is on the right wall and the dining table is on the entrance wall, between the two doors. The bed is 11′ 6″ from the entrance door swing.
Best for: separating sleeping from living without a wall, a bookcase or a curtain.
The trade-off: the dining table sits between the two doors, so you eat right by the entrance.
Layout B: Everything against the walls
All checks pass
The bed, desk and dresser stay where they are in Layout A. The sofa moves to the bottom wall between the two doors, with the coffee table 16″ in front, and the dining table moves to the left wall.
Best for: the most open floor in the middle of the room.
The trade-off: the sofa faces the bed, 11′ 0″ away, so the bed is always in view from the sofa.
Layout C: Floating sofa
All checks pass
The bed moves to the middle of the top wall, centered under the window. The sofa floats at the same spot as in Layout A, the desk turns onto the right wall, the dresser takes the top-left corner, and the dining table stays between the doors.
Best for: a symmetrical bed wall, with the headboard centered under the window.
The trade-off: the bed is 4′ 4″ from the kitchen counter, the closest of the three, and the desk is 3′ 11″ from the window.

Measure this first
- The main room wall to wall in two places, not counting the bathroom. Two 400 sq ft studios can be very different shapes.
- The kitchen counter: its length, its depth, and how far it sits from each corner.
- Both doors: width, which wall they are on, and which way they swing.
- The window: width and how far it is from the nearest corner.
- Your bed frame and sofa at their outside edges, including arms and headboard.
Questions people ask
What are the dimensions of a 400 sq ft studio?
It depends on the shape. After a 40 sq ft bathroom, the 360 sq ft main room is about 19′ × 19′ if square, 17′ × 21′ 3″ in a standard shape (length 1.25 × width) and 15′ × 24′ if long (length 1.6 × width). For the standard shape: width = √(360 ÷ 1.25) = 16.97 ft, and length = 16.97 × 1.25 = 21.21 ft.
Can a 400 sq ft studio fit a queen bed and a full-size sofa?
Yes. A 64 × 84″ queen open on both sides and an 84 × 37″ sofa fit together in all three shapes, along with a coffee table, desk, dresser and dining table, with 30″ walkways.
How do you divide a 400 sq ft studio?
Turn the sofa’s back to the foot of the bed, as in Layout A. That leaves 30″ between the bed and the sofa, and the sofa becomes the divider.
Does a dining table fit in a 400 sq ft studio?
Yes. A 30 × 30″ table fits with 32″ behind each chair, the NKBA clearance for a seat with no one walking behind it. In all three layouts above it shares the room with a queen, an 84″ sofa, a desk and a dresser.
Which 400 sq ft shape is hardest to furnish?
The long one, 15′ × 24′. With 36″ paths and both bed sides open, the solver finds 1 layout instead of 3. Square and standard rooms get 3 at every level.
