12×12 Bedroom Layouts: King Bed Plans With Room to Move

Short answer

Everything fits A 12×12 bedroom fits every bed size we tested with a 48″ desk and a dresser, including a king with 32″ on each side. At roomier 30″ paths, a king or queen keeps a dresser but loses the desk; a full keeps both.

square feet

A 12×12 bedroom is 144″ square: 144 square feet. Centered on any wall, a king frame leaves 144 − 80 = 64″, or 32″ per side, and 144 − 84 = 60″ past its foot. That’s enough for a desk and its chair on the opposite wall, which is what smaller rooms run out of.

So we didn’t guess. Every layout on this page was solved by the same planning engine that runs our Bedroom Solver. It places the furniture, then checks the space beside and below the bed, room to pull out a desk chair and open drawers, the door swing, and a clear walking route from the door to everything. We ran more than 150 combinations of bed size, furniture, clearance setting, door and closet position. Here’s what holds up.

What fits in a 12×12 bedroom

With 24″ walkways and both sides of the bed open, here’s every common bed size alone and with furniture, plus what changes with one side against a wall or with roomier 30″ paths.

Solved with both bed sides open and 24″ walkways unless a column says otherwise. A 30″ door near a corner of one long wall, a 48″ window on the other; a 48×24″ desk and a 32×18″ dresser. Frames are typical outside sizes; check your own.

Three layouts for a 12×12

The room: a 30″ door near one corner, swinging in, and a 48″ window on the opposite wall. All three layouts pass every check.

In the plans, green hatching is space that has to stay clear, the dashed arc is the door swing, and the pale bar on the right wall is the window. The grid is 1 foot.

Layout A: King, desk and dresser

All checks pass

Layout A. King centered, desk and dresser opposite.
  • 32″ on each side of the bed
  • 34″ at the foot of the bed
  • 34″ to pull out the desk chair
  • 40″ in front of the dresser

Best for: couples who want a king, two nightstands up to 32″ wide, and a workspace.

The trade-off: the desk chair pulls out into the path at the foot of the bed.

Layout B: Queen with open floor

All checks pass

Layout B. Queen, desk beside the bed, open floor.
  • 24″ and 31″ beside the bed
  • 59″ of open floor past the foot
  • 31″ to pull out the desk chair
  • 57″ in front of the dresser

Best for: a reading chair, a play mat or a yoga mat: there’s 59″ of open floor past the bed.

The trade-off: the desk sits beside the bed, so its chair rolls back into the bed-side path.

Layout C: King and dresser, 30″ paths

Roomy

Layout C. King and dresser, 30″ paths.
  • 32″ on each side of the bed
  • 40″ at the foot of the bed
  • 40″ in front of the dresser

Best for: anyone who wants the room to feel open: two people can pass at the foot of the bed.

The trade-off: no desk. At 30″ paths, a king and a desk don’t fit together.

Roomier paths with a desk: choose a full

30″ is the width the ADA standards use for the clear floor space beside a bed in accessible hotel rooms. At that setting, a queen and a dresser fit with 40″ on each side, but a desk doesn’t. A full keeps both: 43″ on each side, 39″ at the foot, 39″ for the desk chair and 45″ in front of the dresser.

A queen with a 60″ dresser and a desk

Yes: three layouts, with 24″ and 31″ beside the bed. A six-drawer dresser is about 60″ wide. An 11×12 manages the same pair with 34″ on each side; a 10×12 doesn’t manage it at all.

What changes the answer: door and closet

  • The door. Nothing changed: at the corner or the middle of any wall, every bed size still fit with a desk and a dresser.
  • The closet. A 48″ reach-in closet on one wall didn’t change the answer either: even a king, desk and dresser kept three layouts.

The clearances we checked

These are the numbers behind every verdict on this page. The first is our standard setting; the second is the roomier one.

The dresser number is a 16″ drawer pulled all the way out plus room to stand in front of it. The walking route is checked on a grid, so a layout fails if any piece of furniture can only be reached by squeezing.

Measure this first

  • Wall to wall in two places: rooms are rarely perfectly square.
  • Door width, and which way the door swings.
  • Where the closet is, and how its doors open.
  • Window sill height, and any radiator or heater below it.
  • Your bed frame’s outside size, not just the mattress.

Questions people ask

Is 12×12 big enough for a king bed?

Yes. Centered on any wall, a king gets 32″ on each side, with room for a desk and a dresser on the opposite wall.

Can you fit a king bed, desk and dresser in a 12×12 room?

Yes, in three layouts at 24″ walkways. At roomier 30″ walkways, a king fits with a dresser but not a desk.

What size rug for a king in a 12×12 room?

Our rug calculator checks every standard size against your room and bed. Retailers usually suggest a 9×12 under a king.

Where should the bed go in a 12×12 bedroom?

Centered on the wall that keeps the door swing clear of the bed. In our tests the door’s position didn’t change what fits, so choose by light and view.
