Short answer
Room minus 72″ Take 72″ off each room dimension, which leaves 36″ behind the chairs on every side, and what’s left is your largest table. A 10×12 dining area fits up to a 72″-long table, which seats 6. If no one ever passes behind the chairs, 32″ a side is the minimum.
36″
to edge past a seated diner
44″
to walk behind the chairs
24″
of table edge per person
Plan for the chairs, not just the table. A diner pushed back from the table takes up the space between the table edge and the wall, and anyone who needs to get past needs more. The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) publishes those distances, and the calculator above applies them to your room.
How much room behind the chairs
| Behind the chairs | Clearance | What it allows |

| Seated, no one passing | 32″ | Chairs pull out; nobody walks behind |
| Edge past | 36″ | Someone can squeeze past a seated diner |
| Walk past | 44″ | Comfortable walking behind the chairs |
| Wheelchair passage | 60″ | A wheelchair can pass behind a seated diner |

For a dining corner in a living room, measure to the edge of the walkway or the back of the sofa instead of a wall. Our guide to a dining table in a small living room walks through the layouts.

Measure this first
- The dining area, wall to wall or to the edge of the walkway.
- Anything that sticks out: radiators, a sideboard, a door swing.
- Whether people walk behind the chairs to reach the kitchen or a door.
- Your chairs: armchairs need more than 24″ of table edge each.
Questions people ask
How much space do you need around a dining table?
At least 36″ from the table edge to the wall so people can edge past seated diners, and 44″ to walk behind them. 32″ works only if no one ever passes.
What size table fits a 10×10 dining room?
With 36″ on every side, up to a 48×48″ table or a 48″ round. Either seats 4; the round can squeeze in 6.
How many people fit at a 6-foot table?
Six: West Elm sizes tables 60–72″ long for six. Along a 72″ side, that’s three diners at 24″ each.
Is a round table better in a small room?
In a square room, a round table seats about the same number as a square one of the same size, and its curved edge leaves a little more space at the corners for passing.
